| The author discussed the stability of arch dams against up-slide alone the inclined dam foundation. The analysis indicated that the frictional resistance between transverse joints of arch dam was an essential factor to keep the stability against up-slide. The composite off-stabilization due to up-lift of monoliths on river bed and up-slide of monoliths on bank slope would be a most probable failure mode of thin arch dams on gently sloped abutments. |
