                  Abstract:Undersituationsoftheperiodicalwaterlevelfluctuations,thefineparticlesinrockfillsmightbewashed
                  out ,therebypromotingthewetting - inducedlong - term deformationofrockfills.Torevealthemechanism ofthe
                  largelong - termdeformationofarock - filldam ,aseriesofcomparativeoedometererosiontestswereconductedon
                  thesampleswithbothcontinuousanddiscontinuousparticlegradationsofthedam ’supstream rockfillundercon
                  stantandfluctuatingwaterlevelconditionsrespectively.Thehistoriesoftheaxialstrainandfineparticlelosswere
                  recordedunderdifferentconditions.Thecomparativetestresultsconfirmedthatthewaterlevelfluctuationcanlead
                  toconsiderableamountofparticlelossandthusaggravatethewettingdeformation,andtheinfluencingextentde
                  pendsontheparticlegradation ,surchargepressure,thefallingspeedofwaterlevelandinitialwatercontent.The
                  specimensofacontinuousgradationareinternallystableandexhibitsmalleramountoffineparticlelossthanthe
                  specimensofagapgradation,andconsequently,fineparticlelosshaslesssignificanteffectonthewettingdeform
                  ation.Highersurchargepressurecanreducethepromotioneffectoffineparticlelossonwettingdeformationbecause
                  ofthelessparticlelossunderthehigherparticleinteractionforces.Thefineparticlelossincreaseswiththeincreas
                  ingfallingspeedofwaterlevel ,andtherefore,largerwettingdeformationwasobservedunderthetestsofhigher
                  waterdischargerate.Increasingtheinitialwatercontentwillimprovethecompactnessoftherockfillmaterial ,re
                  sultinginatighterparticlearrangementanddifficultyinfineparticleloss,therebyfineparticlelosshaslesssignifi
                  canteffectonthewettingdeformation.
