Abstract:Expansivesoilsmayshrink,crackandsubsideastheydry,causingaremarkableinfluenceontheirhy
draulicandmechanicalbehaviorsandleadingtoanadverseimpactonthedeformationandstabilityofhydraulic
structureintheregionsofexpansivesoils.Therefore,itisnecessarytoinvestigatethemeso - scalemechanismand
macro - scaleresponseofthesethreephysicalprocessesInresponse , asetofmathematicalmodelswerefirst
proposedfortheaggregate ,crack,andsubsidencedomainsIntheprocessofallthree,thegeometricalrelationship
betweenidealsoilblockandcrackwasthenappliedtoderivationoftheequationforrelativecrackwidth.Finally ,
usingthesamesetofparameters,thesetofmathematicalmodelswerevalidatedagainstthepublisheddata(inclu
dingthesupplementarytestofexpansivesoilinAnkang)fordifferentexpansivesoilsinthelaboratoryandfield,for
describingtheevolutionofaggregateporosity ,crackratio,relativecrackwidth,subsidenceratioandtherelation
amongaggregateporosity ,watercontentandmatricsuction.Thissetofmathematicalmodelsprovidesamethodto
analyzevolumechangecharacteristicandhydraulicconductivitybehaviorofexpansivesoils.
