Abstract:Inthispaper,anexperimentalstudyiscarriedoutonthesteelbarbendingbulgeproblem oftheface
slabextrudingrupturealongtheslopedirectionofconcretefacedrockfilldams.Thecompressiontestoftheconcrete
columnwithasingleverticalbarisusedtosimulatetheextrudingrupturealongtheslopedirection.Thetestresults
confirmthatthecompressivestrengthofnon - stirrupreinforcedconcretecolumnswaslowerthanthatofplaincon
cretecolumnsinpreviousstudies,andthesmallerthethicknessofreinforcementcover,thelowerthestrength.
Comparedwithplainconcretecolumns ,thestrengthofreinforcedconcretecolumnswith5cmprotectivelayerde
creasesbyabout10%.Accordingtothefailureloadresultsofthetest,thelateralsupportstiffnesskofthecolumn
isinverselydeducedthroughtheexistingtheoreticalsolution.Forcolumnswith5cmand8cmcoverthickness ,the

kvaluesare0.841N·mm and1.032N·mm respectively.Aftertheanalysisoftestresults,itisfoundthateach
sectionofreinforcedconcretecolumndoesnotconformthestrainplaneassumption ,thereinforcementdoesnotde
forminharmonywiththeconcreteincompression.Thereisastronginteractionbetweensteelandconcrete.There
sultsofthisstudyagainshowthatlimitingthelateraldeformationofthereinforcementisthefundamentalmeasureto
preventtheextrudingruptureofthepanelalongtheslopedirection.Inordertoprovideabasisforthequantitative
designofsuchmeasures ,thenumericalsimulationofthefaceslabextrudingrupturecausedbythesteelbarben
dingbulgeshouldbecarriedout.
