Abstract:Sandstone,asarepresentativesedimentaryrock,iscommonlyencounteredinengineeringproblems
suchastunnelexcavationandslopestability.Asatypicalquasi - brittlematerial,thefracturepropertiesofsand
stonearecrucialmechanicalcharacteristicsinengineeringapplications.Toinvestigatetheinfluenceofbedding
planeorientationandspecimensizeonthedoubleKfractureparametersofsandstone,thisstudyconductedsystem
aticthree - pointbendingfracturetestsusingbeamspecimenswithheightsof10,20and40mm,andbeddingan
glesof0°,30°,60°and90°,respectively.Completemacroscopicresponsecurves,fractureparameters,and
failuremodeswereobtainedthroughtheexperiments ,confirmingthatthefractureprocessofsandstonecanbefully
describedusingthedoubleKfracturemodel.Boththedipangleofbeddingandthespecimenheightsignificantlyaf
fectthedoubleKfractureparameters :withaconstantspecimenheight,thepeakload,unstablefracturetough
ness ,andinitiationfracturetoughnessdecreaseasthebeddingdipangleincreases,whilewithconstantbedding
planeorientation ,thepeakloadandunstablefracturetoughnessincreasewithspecimenheight,buttheinitiation
toughnessremainsrelativelyunchanged ,furtherverifyingitasaninherentmaterialproperty.Additionally,the
failuremodesofthespecimensexhibitclearanisotropiccharacteristicsbasedonbeddingplaneorientation ,showing
amixedfailuremodeoftensionandshearasthebeddingdipangleincreases.
