                  Abstract:ThecascadereservoirsinthelowerJinshaRiverwereselectedascasestudy.Boththetime - varyingP -
                  Ⅲ curvefitting(Tv - P3?CF)methodandthemostlikelyfloodregionalcomposition(MLFRC)methodwereem
                  ployedtoestimatethedesignfloodduringthereservoiroperationperiod ,consideringtheregulationeffectsofup
                  streamreservoirsinimplicitandexplicitway,respectively.Thedesignfloodhydrographswereamplifiedbythe
                  samefrequencymethod,andthereservoirfloodcontrolwaterlevels(FCWLs)weredetermined.Theresultsindi
                  catethat:(1)Thedesignfloodsduringoperationperiodcalculatedbytwomethodsareconsistentlylowerthan
                  thoseduringtheconstructionperiod.TheTv - P3?CFmethodofferscovariatewithouttheneedtoconsiderthereser
                  voiroperationandrestoreflowdataseries ,whiletheMLFRCmethod,whichperformsstep - by - stepfloodrouting
                  from upstreamtodownstreamforeachreservoir ,ismuchcomplexinitscalculationprocessbutholdspracticalsig
                  nificance.(2)Theregulationeffectofupperreservoirssignificantlyreducesdownstream floods,1,000 - year
                  designfloodpeak,3 - day,7 - day,and15 - dayfloodvolumesestimatedbytheTv - P3?CF(MLFRC)method
                  havereducedabout37.30%(41.65%),35.96%(39.66%),36.82%(35.72%),and28.03%(26.76%)atthe
                  XiangjiabaReservoir , respectively.(3) Maintainingtheoriginalfloodpreventionstandardsunchanged, the
                  FCWLsderivedbyfloodregulatingfortheWudongde - Baihetan - Xiluodu - Xiangjiabacascadereservoirsare955.6 、
                  794.6、572.3and373.2m,respectively.Comparedtoreservoiroperationbasedontheflood - limitedwaterlevels,
                  theoperationofcascadereservoirsbasedonFCWLscangenerate2.76billionkW·hmorepower( + 2.6%)from
                  JunetoSeptemberannually,whichhassignificanteconomicbenefits.
